omg is my gen z showing ???

being vulnerable on the main

HI BOYS AND GIRLS

Reminder of the day: Even the most successful people in the world got help. Hot girls help each other!!

Let’s get into it 👇

In my mentor era

Last month, I got the opportunity to moderate a Digital Marketing community on a new career app called Fide.

Think of it as if LinkedIn and Clubhouse had a baby (minus the audio). The platform is designed to help students and early-career professionals navigate job searching and professional relationship building in a way that feels natural and authentic rather than icky & transactional like networking sometimes can be.

Running the channel basically meant chatting with people about social media and networking while dropping memes and fun polls to keep everyone entertained and the convo flowing.

Here’s a sneak peek at what was asking all the bright, young minds of our generation:

I picked unfixable typo….think of all the social media impressions !!

If you’re interested in joining the channel, you can use this early invite code and use enter the code: SOCIAL

(Newsletter is #notspons but this video was😏👇)

One of the coolest parts? I actually had one of the members from my channel reach out for a 1:1 convo about what having a job in social media is really like.

We talked about content creation and strategy, but honestly one of the last questions she asked me was something I'd never heard from any of the little ducklings sliding into my LinkedIn DMs before:

“Do you think that leaning into being casual and Gen Z on your personal socials and in at work has helped you in your career?"

- Olivia :)

It feels funny to even say this, but I actually think it has. Being "Gen Z" became my brand, but I honestly think it's because I was just being myself lol.

Here's the thing though, I think Gen Z people really do value and express authenticity, and if I'm being honest, some of our lingo just makes us stand out in professional settings.

Like, throwing a "slay" in your interview makes you memorable (I know from personal experience that the people on the other end of the call will either laugh or simply not know what to do).

in case you’re wondering what being Gen Z means on LinkedIn

And of course on the social media side, it’s helped with cultural relevance + growing up online + having content creation be second nature and all that.

But Olivia’s question boils down to authenticity imo (sorry for the buzzword lol) but it works like this:

  1. be yourself, try your best, and do things that feel natural to you

  2. you’ll end up in an environment or job or wherever that is meant for you

  3. keep slaying

^ rules of the universe

So TLDR: be yourself !!

Or maybe everyone secretly finds me annoying and I simply don’t know how to read a room🤷🏻‍♀️

I mean, singing songs in your weekly team meetings definitely isn’t for everyone, but it’s worked out for me this far!

If for whatever reason it stops working, this very newsletter will be the first to hear about it.

BEING VULNERABLE ON THE MAIN

I started this new series on beehiiv socials of me rebuilding my website on beehiiv’s new web builder (and I’ll eventually redesign this email too).

Check out the first installment of this series below👇

Lmk what I should add to the website next, or if you have any thoughts or feedback on this one :)

GEN Z VOCAB BABY

DTM/DTM-ing: Doing Too Much. Pretty self explanatory🫡

Examples:

“Should I double text him or is that DTM-ing” = Do I text him again or is that doing too much???

Until next time!
