every rule is breakable

on creativity & artistry

We are all artists

One thing about hot people? They embrace their creativity.

And contrary to what any middle school art class may have led you to believe, creativity isn’t just something you’re born with. It’s a skill.

It’s something you get better at with practice and repetition, no matter what your “art form” is: writing, painting, dancing, cooking, photography, film, whatever.

But I’ve noticed a trap !!!! Noooooo

Once something works, we subconsciously start following that formula like it’s THE LAW👩‍⚖️

The painting goes in the square frame. The film is 90-120 minutes long. The Instagram carousel has 10 slides.

On one hand, totally makes sense: success gives us structure.

But when we are too accepting of the rules, we limit ourselves before we’ve even started.

It becomes a formula that we want to follow. It becomes just “what we do.”

Remember: we are not in math and science world right now where the rules and the laws can be absolute. We’re in Personality Hire world™️ where the rules are whatever we want them to be.

The “rules” made by artists (us) aren’t absolute at all, they’re assumptions.

And getting a little too comfortable with these assumptions actually guide us toward more average behaviors.

And who wants to be average?! Not I!

Soooo hate to say it boys and girls, but we have to challenge ourselves and our processes.

& we can’t always assume that the first successful formula we find is the only way or the best way.

Challenge ourselves to look beyond what has been done before so we avoid too much of the same.

Creatively, every rule is breakable.

an except from The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin

Anyway, moral of the story?

If it’s feeling stale, dry, boring, musty and crusty…it probably is.

Keep being curious and asking questions. The rules are made up! And vibes don’t lie!

If you liked this, this inspo all came from a booked I picked up over the weekend👇

UNROT YOUR BRAIN

If you're also a little woo woo and want to dive deeper into creativity, here’s the book I’m reading that sparked all of this:

The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin.

(Pick up at a local bookstore or here’s an amazon link)

Our guy Rick doesn’t claim these are facts. It’s more like a collection of thoughts and observations about the creative process.

If you feel creative or want to build up the skill of being creative, I’d recommend it.

Easy read & pairs well with an introspective era :)

GEN Z VOCAB BABY

chopped: ugly, unattractive. can be used to refer to a person’s appearance, outfit, or just a general situation.

“My barber messed up my hairline…I’m so chopped.”

See you next week!!
