performance review season

CLOCKED by a 40-year-old man
Sometimes there are things you know deep down… but you don’t admit them to yourself until someone else says it out loud to your face.
For me, that moment came during my recent performance review.
We’re doing the whole song and dance, “I’m proud of you,” “Great work this year,” me mentally giving myself a gold star…and then I get the most unthinkable constructive feedback known to man.
“You need to do more fun stuff, you’re supposed to be cool and young. Text your friends and plan a vacation next year.” - my manager being so FR
???????? Me ?!??! Coolest girl in the world getting feedback to be cooler and more fun?!!?!!
The tea is he was actually SO right, and he was (rightfully) unimpressed when I told him I only took 3 days off in 2025.
(I do not say that as a weird hustle-flex…it literally just worked out that way. I optimize my long weekends okay!!!)
But shout out to the managers who care about you as an employee and also as a person.
Here’s the text I sent to the girl’s group chat immediately when our meeting ended:

This conversation made me realize something I preach all the time but I have not been practicing as well as I thought:
You can do it ALL.
So here’s your festive reminder, because I needed it too:
You can care deeply about your career and still plan the trip, host the party, go 48 hours without checking your work notifications, or even (gasp) sleep in.
Working hard AND playing hard. Having the career AND the life.
“Doing it all” means everything that makes life full. And play is essential!!
Cheers to more playfulness this holiday season and beyond 🕺

Sometimes the best thing you can do for your brain is consume some content that makes you feel good and happy.
Here’s a screen cap from one of my fav holiday movies that really fits the vibe of this week’s send:

from The Holiday (2006)

lowkenuinley = lowkey + genuinely. The breakdown:
lowkey: subtly, somewhat
genuinely: truly, authentically, sincerely
The combo of these two words means you feel something is true, but in a more subdued way.
Example: That party was lowkenuinley good…
Here’s a video explaining some of the lore behind this by @etymologynerd! I’m obsessed with him.
